David's Designs Artist Statement
By DeAnn
Born July 9, 1957, in Klamath Falls, Oregon, I am a Native American and a registered member of the Klamath Indian Tribe, . My Great Great Grandfather, Boss Ki You (a.k.a. Allen David), was tribal Head of the Ewksknii (The Klamath Upper Marsh) and one of the original signers to the Peace Treaty of 1864. My Parents were raised on the Klamath Reservation and attended school in the town of Chiloquin, Oregon. My grandmother was Post Master in Chiloquin for more than 17 years. Many family members still live in the area and are active in the restoration of tribal customs. My uncle, a tribal elder continues to teach the language today. As a young family we relocated to Oregon's Willamette Valley, we were raised in a very different culture than that of our ancestors. Despite geographical separation my brothers and I remained close to our paternal grandparents until their deaths. It is through my close relationship with my grandfather, Randolph David, that I learned the love of my heritage. My grandfather was a wonderful cartoonist and artist of Indian life. My talent and ability to see with an artist's eye are gifts of love from this man. My connection to my ancestry is spiritual. The cultural diversity of the area tribes intrigues me. My love for American Indian art, both traditional and non-traditional shows in the collection of pieces on display in my home. David's Designs was established in 1990, after my grandfather gifted me with his original works of cartoon designs and drawings that depict the lighter side of tribal custom and lifestyle. The original intent was to reproduce grandpa's cartoons on clothing and other mediums. Since then, I have struggled to find the right artistic area for me to work in. Through the years, I have beaded, made moccasins, dream catchers and painted. Some have sold and some have been given as gifts, but none of those art forms were soul satisfying. While employed at Soft Star Shoes, a childrens shoe manufacturer, I began to work more with the leather. I started to make small medicine bags, but still desired more unique art. One afternoon while sitting in my studio listening to the beat of drums and soft flutes, the first spiritual face, Runs Wild, was born. I found it! I felt it! My spirit had found a home! I knew I had to make more. Drawing on my floral experience, I began to arrange feathers around the leather face, and, as a result, I have found an art form that leaves my spirit in calm satisfaction. I have found great inner peace and tranquility in the completion of each new face. I can pull myself into a calm place with the feel of the wet leather as I smooth and mold it loose myself in the long forgotten past with each piece I make. Peace and Serenity To All.
